Albanian mom hidingFears deportation: 'I'm so scared'
A Toronto mom and her three children -- including 23-month-old twins -- have gone into hiding to avoid arrest by immigration agents who have already nabbed her husband for deportation to Albania.
Anilda Tabaj, 32, has uprooted daughter Maria, 8, and sons Vincenzio and Christian, and moved from their home to avoid the same fate as husband, Arjan, 37, who was jailed Sunday after police learned he was here illegally when they pulled him over in a traffic stop.
"The children are crying and I'm so scared," Anilda said yesterday from a Toronto safe house. "The children want their father and I don't know what else to do."
She said the family, except for the Canadian-born twins, have lost their refugee claims and subsequent appeals to the Federal Court of Canada.
Anilda said Maria has stopped attending school out of fear she'll be picked up and deported.
"We can't work or do very much," she said. "The twins know something bad is going on and won't stop crying."
The family çame to Canada as refugees in 1999. They abandoned their claims and returned to Albania, returning to Canada with Maria in 2001, Federal Court documents show.
Arjan is being held at an immigration detention centre and is slated for a hearing tomorrow. He was sought on a warrant for not showing up at a previous hearing.
"I don't want my family to be deported," Arjan said yesterday. "I will be killed if I am sent back to Albania." He said his life is in danger from socialist government agents in Albania, who shot and almost killed him in 1999 for allegedly being a member of a democratic party. http://www.torontosun.com/News/Toron...06417-sun.html
