Çameria geographically is situated on the to-day north-west Greece. This beautiful region, has a rich Albanian her5tage and it was only in the 1912 that it was annexed unfairly and unjustifiably from Greece. This was the aftermath of the decision of the great powers to give Çameria to Greece, just as the great powers had made similar decisions to give Kosova and other Albanian territories to Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro.

The word Çam is an evolution of the word "t'chiam" which is the name of an ancient river passing right through Çameria (The word T'chamis appears on many ancient Roman and even Hellenic maps, indicating that the word Chameria is older than the word Epirus, and it's used only by Albanians). Another branch of this river remains to be known to this day as the "lumi i kalamait" (Kalamait River - Childrens Rivier). What's most important is that everything about Çameria is Albanian in every sense of the word. The word Çameria has more of a topological meaning, but Çams have a very strong Albanian ethnicity, tradition and customs. Çameria has a very well-defined ethno-geographical meaning, which is strongly Albanian.

A large number of Çam population is situated on the seaside and goes up to the Gulf of Preveza. Another considerable number of towns and villages are situated on both sides of the river of "kalamait". The rest of of the Çam villages and towns are situated in more remote places and often on hills and mountains.

The Greek government has been very hostile toward Çams and the main reason is the fact that Çams have a very strong Albanian identity. Another reason of the Greek hostilities is the fact that Greeks inherited a very hostile policy towards us. During the period of time, from 1854 till 1877 the Albanians of Çameria resisted successfully the attacks from Greek "Andartes". During the WWI and WWII the greek troops attacked Çameria again. The (provisional) government of Vlora (Albania) responded by sending Albanian military troops to assist the Albanian population of Çameria , but the decision of the Ambassadors Conference assigned Çameria to Greece. As a result of this decision by the great powers, Greeks forces led by the hateful figure of N. Zervas launched attackers that ended up with many innocent Albanian locals killed.

To this day, we Çams in greece are described as bad people from an increasing "suffocating" Greek propaganda based on the fact that we refuse to be assimilated as it is the case with some of "Arvanites" in south and central Greece.

The today exact number of Albanians of Çameria in Greece is approx. one million people, taking into the account some relativly newly formed Çam villages and towns elsewhere in Greece..if all the number of Albanians in Çameria is added to the number of Arvanites in other areas of Greece, then the total number of Albanians in Greece is around 3.000.000 people. However only Albanians in Çameria call themselves real Shqiptars (Albanians). Arvanites elsewhere in Greece are under greater assimilating pressure from the Greek government and Anti-Albanian Greek circles.

This section is dedicated to hundreds of thousands of Albanians from the region of Chameria expelled by force, from the Greek forces in 1944 and residing now in the Republic of Albania and in the memory of 850,000 Cham Albanians sent to Turkey during the period between 1913-44.

During the summer of 1944, the neo-nazi forces led by Zervas attacked many villages and towns of Chameria and as a result 9,000 Albanians (including children, women and old folks) were killed indiscriminately. A considerable number of Albanians were expelled and live now in the Republic of Albania. The official number of those Albanian refugees from Chameria is between 150,000 and 300,000.

Today they have formed their own Albanian patriotic and cultural association based in Tirana and which is active right across Albania. Among other they are asking from the Greek government in Athens-Greece, to be repatriated and their lands and other assets be returned to them as well as compensations for the usage of the lands for the past 50 years. Also they are rallying for the opening of Albanian schools to the Albanians living in Chameria.

The policy of expulsion of Cham Albanians from Chameria had started earlier than 1944. Greeks as well as Serbs followed the same pattern in politics with respect to Albanians. Often they had signed documents with the Turkish government for the exchange of Muslims with Christians. During all this not a single Cham Albanian was asked! As a result of such policy around 850,000 Cham Albanians from Chameria were sent to Turkey, where they are settled in the region of Asia minor in Turkey.

Prior to WWI and WWII, the population in Çameria was around 93% Albanian, the rest were other ethnic groups such as Greeks, Vlachs, gypsies, etc.. On the 19th century, 80% of the Albanian population in Çameria was of Muslim Religion (the process of conversion to Islam started in the 18th century) and a 20% Christian Orthodox, however the first world war, found the the Albanian community as made up of 50% muslim and 50% orthodox believers (this shift happened in a matter of 70 years). After the world wars a fraction of the Muslim Populations was expelled by the Greek special forces, leaving intact the mainly orthodox Albanian population (50%) and a small fraction of molsims(13%) who by now mostly converted to orthodoxy to survive. The conversion back and forth from one religion to the other, before the World War I, was common among families!

However both Albanian religious communities were extremely close to each-other before the war and to this day, the Greek government has not managed to assimilate the Albanians of Çameria. The Albanian language is spoken indoors and outdoors as much as on everyday working places, but the Greek government with very little pressure from outside refuses to recognize Albanian minority in Greece and refuses to open schools on Albanian language.

The region is officially known as Epirus by the Greek government, but on the further north western corner of Greece, every single people knows the place as Çameria. Anyone from this region stating that he or she is a Çam, makes a political statement saying that he or she is an Albanian. That's why the Greek government doesn't know officially the region as Çameria. The heartland of Çameria is also called Thesprotia.

My own opinion is that this region has still an Albanian majority (since many people of other ethnic groups have emigrated away, which has compensated somehow for the displacement of some Albanians during WWI and WWII!) and all the Çams expelled unjustifiably from Greece are very welcomed by all the Albanian people here, there is a UN resolution which asks the Greek government to repatriate our brothers and sisters back to their homes, where they belong among the rest of us. http://www.illyrians.org/cameria.html

Trajtimi i interesave kombetare do te mbetet fusha me delikate, e cila duhet t'i hape rrugen rizgjimit te vetedijes kombetare, per te zgjidhur padrejtesite historike ndaj Shqiperise. Veshtrimi me kete sy i problematikes shqiptare qe dominon sot ne rajon, obligon inteligjencen dhe njerezit me fryme idealiste kombetare, te synojne drejt misionit per nje pavaresi te plote kombetare. Levizjet politike drejt nje synimi te tille ne dekaden e fundit, kane nxitur reagimet dhe kundervenien e ashper te fqinjve te Shqiperise. Kerkesat e shqiptareve, te perfaqesuara nga forcat progresiste perparimtare te popullit shqiptar, bejne te turbullohen kundershtaret tradicionale dhe perkrahesit e tyre, duke nxitur presionet e hapura politike, ekonomike e pse jo dhe ushtarake. Ceshtja kombetare eshte vene perballe sfidave te fuqishme qe kerkojne zgjidhje. Tradicionalisht ne politiken shqiptare, perhere ka nxjerre koke nje qendrim i shpifur, nen "petkun kombetar", i perfaqesuar nga pseudopatriote, te cilet, duke i zvarritur e sabotuar interesat e ceshtjeve madhore, kane krijuar skandale politike dhe tkurrjen e kombit shqiptar. Ata, ne menyre sistematike, kane dhunuar vullnetin e shqiptareve per bashkim. Kjo politike e mbrapshte, ka shfrytezuar mjedisin e coroditur social - politik, duke keqperdorur ndjenjat e popullit shqiptar dhe duke abuzuar me te drejten e perfaqesimit te tij. Ndergjegja kombetare ne cdo rast, ka pesuar trauma psikologjike, coroditje dhe shperndarje gjeografike te detyruar, e cila ka kushtezuar mosreagimet efektive, por gjithsesi, ajo se fundi ka filluar te veproje. Rajoni i trazuar dhe "leksionet e demokracise". Ne ditet e sotme, perballe nje tkurrjeje te tille, venia ne veprim e skalioneve te mafias politike dhe te strukturave te krimit te organizuar, i ka vene ata perballe me forcat progresiste, demokratike te popullit shqiptar. Fare hapur, ato, kane shtuar presionin mbi institucionet e rendesishme te shtetit, duke synuar shmangien e tyre nga misioni politik. Reagimet nuk mungojne as nga elemente te politikes rajonale, te cilet e shikojne me shume xhelozi rizgjimin kombetar te shqiptareve. Ata jane te "merakosur" per sigurine rajonale dhe nen kete justifikim, jane te gatshem te pengojne deri ne asgjesim, cdo levizje me karater kombetar. Frika e nje destabilizimi te mundshem rajonal, te mbeshtetur ne motive etnike, i ben te mbajne qendrime cinike, duke shkelur me te dy kembet "leksionet e tyre te demokracise". Ky qendrim eshte nje precedent me shume, per nje destabilizim te mundshem ne rajonin ballkanik. Keto kunderveprime aktive, kane ndikuar ne dem te perpjekjeve te shqiptareve per progres kombetar, qofte ne Kosove, Kosoven Lindore dhe ne Maqedoni. Ne menyre cinike, pa nje analize te thelle te shkaqeve dhe pasojave te tyre, paragjykohen revoltat e fundit ne Kosove, pa marre aspak parasysh provokimin e shqiptaree nga raporti i fundit i GNK-se dhe nga degjenerimi i misionit te organizmave nderkombetare per vendosjen e demokracise ne Kosove dhe integrimin e saj ekonomik. Se fundi, kjo po ndodh ne levizjen kombetare per te drejtat e popullsise shqiptare te Camerise. Keto levizje politike, sigurisht qe, prishin statucuo-ne ne Ballkan dhe nuk perfillin interesat e fqinjve, te dalluar per nacionalizmin e tyre agresiv. Me prane realitetit, politika dhe populli shqiptar sot perballet me kerkesat dhe pamundesine e zgjdhjes se ceshtjes se krahines se Camerise.

Ne thelbin e problemit. Cameria eshte plaga e hapur e kombit shqiptar. Braktisja e saj nga politika i dha nje goditje te drejtperdrejte interesave tona kombetare, duke realizuar nje akt te turpshem tradhtie. Nuk kemi te bejme ketu me perfundime ekstremiste, por me denoncimin e nje qendrimi joparimor te nje politike te papergjegjshme, e cila ne momente te caktuara tregon se, eshte ne gjendje t'i braktise interesat kombetare. Per interesa te ngushta, politika, eshte e predispozuar te braktise aspiratat e popullit shqiptar per hater "te zemerimit" te padroneve dhe te "rekomandimeve" nderkombetare. Nje situate politike, e cila ne vazhdimesi duhet te krijoje kushte qe, deformatoret politike te demaskohen. Nje situate politike, e cila duhet te detyroje institucionet e shtetit, qe te mbajne qendrim ndaj kemenguljes greke per mosheqjen e "ligjit te luftes", ose te shpjegohen ne opinion, perse ata nuk kane deshire te mbrojne interesat kombetare. Inteligjenca shqiptare dhe Cameria duhet te zgjohen.

Sot inteligjenca shqiptare duhet t'u shmanget retorikave dhe te mbroje me kemengulje ceshtjen e popullise shqiptare te Camerise, ne kuadrin e te drejtave qe u jep demokracia dhe proceset e integrimit ne Europe. Intelektualet duhet te zgjohen dhe te mos lejojne, qe te dhunohet nje ceshtje kaq e rendesishme, nga politikane "patriote". Kush i thote vetes patriot dhe intelektual, duhet te shpalose, jo vetem dijet per historine e Camerise, por me kete rast, duhet te zbertheje konfliktin qe ka sot politika shqiptare dhe te drejtat qe i takojne popullsise shqiptare te Camerise, te tregojne qendrimin e tyre, duke denoncuar hapur politiken zyrtare kapitulluese te institucioneve te shtetit shqiptar.

Ne kete situate Cameria duhet te zgjohet. Filozofia e mbrapshte, e cila i ka mveshur asaj psikologjine e fajesise, qe kjo popullsi ndruhet te shfaqe identitetin dhe nuk del e tera ne protesta masive, ben qe ajo te ndihet padrejtesisht inferiore ne vlerat qe perfaqeson. Ka ardhur koha qe popullsia e Camerise te vetezgjohet dhe te marre ne dore fatin e saj. Protesta dhe misioni i saj, eshte nje levizje e fuqishme, qe do t'ia dije per nder Shqiperia. Nuk eshte tregues i ndjeshmerise politike fakti qe, per levizjen "Nano ik" te mblidhen disa mijera veta dhe per nje ceshtje madhore, popullsia shqiptare e Camerise te lihet vetem. Levizja "Nano ik" mund te kete elemente pozitive apo negative, por ajo nuk mund te barazohet kurre me reagimin per probleme te interesave kombetare. Mbrojtja e ketyre interesave, duhet te dale mbi cdo levizje tjeter. Zoti Berisha mungoi ne votim dhe pa u shqetesuar per ceshtjen e Camerise, vazhdon te bertase "Nano ik". Ne kohen e presidences se vet, eshte deklaruar per ceshtjen e Camerise ne Parlamentin Shqiptar, por ai "agjeroi" per kete, vetem30 dite" dhe ne krye te dites se 31-te, priti Gejxhin ne Shqiperi. Me siguri, zoti Berisha dhe disa politikane te tjere, perfshi ketu edhe zotin Nano, duhet te jene ndikuar ne qendrimin e tyre nga antishqiptari i terbuar Geixh. Perse u duhet, tradicionalistit Berisha dhe "moskokecaresit" Nano ky njeri i urryer per shqiptaret? Zoti Nano arrin ta mbroje hapur ne emisione televizive. Si shpjegohet qe, te dy keta politikane, qe "zihen e grihen me njeri tjetrin", mbeshteten nga i njejti antishqiptar, si "i famshmi" Geixh?!! Kush mund ta shpjegoje rebusin politik ne qendrimin e Tiranes zyrtare?! Perse u duhet "certifikata e besueshmerise" se ketij greko - amerikani, zoterinjve Berisha dhe Nano. Zoti Berisha e di se elektorati i popullsise shqiptare came ne Shqiperi eshte nje mbeshtetje e fuqishme per PD-ne. Por, ne nje moment delikat per kete popullsi, ata tradhtohen, goditen dhe gjakosen rende, arrestohen dhe lihen ne mes te rruges sikur te mos ekzistonin.

Nje qendrim absurd. Kjo popullsi duhet te zgjohet, kreret e tyre te pozicionohen dhe levizja te mos lejohet qe te manipulohet me nga partite politike ne Shqiperi. Ceshtja e te drejtave te popullsise shqiptare te Camerise, eshte shume me e rendesishme sesa lufta politike brenda vendit. Ajo u sherben ne menyre te cmuar interesave kombetare. Kjo situate politike po demton imazhin e shqiptareve ne bote dhe sot, kjo politike aspak serioze, me tekat dhe skrupulozitetin e saj, po kristalizon mendimin se, "shqiptaret nuk jane te zote qe te bejne shtet". Kjo mund te jete nje nga arsyet europiane te ngurrimit te tyre, per te zbatuar kodin e demokracise ne Kosove. A do te ishte i besueshem mendimi se Europa po perpiqet "ta edukoje" Kosoven me standardet e saj, qe ajo "te mos i ngjaje Shqiperise" ne "tekat e saj"?! Kjo do tu sherbente coviceve e te tjereve, si nje "argument" kunder Kosoves. Kete konstatim duhet ta vleresojme si nje nje thirrje, per tu treguar vendin "kongresmeneve", "kepedareve" dhe "kartonaxhinjve" te shitur shqiptare, qe per hic gje, nuk ngurrojne te shesin interesat kombetare te popullit shqiptar. Koha e nje riorganizimi te domosdoshem. Ne kete levizje te fuqishme, barren e saj te madhe nuk e perballon dot vetem popullsia shqiptare e Camerise. Pa hequr dore nga misioni dhe platforma e veprimit, eshte i nevojshem orientimi drejt nje organizimi politik, ne formen dhe permbajtjen ligjore, qe vota e kesaj popullsie, te arrijne te depertojne direkt ne Parlamentin Shqiptar, jo per interesa te partive politike, por per te mbrojtur ceshtjen e Camerise. Fakti, qe votat e tyre jane keqperdorur nga dy partite me te medha politike, duhet t'i beje ata, qe te mendojne per zgjidhjen serioze te ketij problemi.

Unifikimin e veprimtarise politike te Shoqates Atdhetare Politike "Cameria" me shoqaten "Laberia", "Kosova" e te tjera, krijimi i nje trinomi te fuqishem atdhetar me permbajtje te thelle kombetare, duke shfaqur publikisht qendrimin, pikepamjet dhe kerkesat, perballe politikes se mbrapshte shqiptare, per ta detyruar ate t'i bindet vullnetit te popullit shqiptar. Ky eshte nje problem i madh, qe lidhet me nje rivendikim madhor te te drejtave historike te mohuara.

Si perfundim: Cameria dhe kombi shqiptar po zgjohen.

Tradhtia ndaj interesave kombetare nuk njeh kufij, por ajo nuk duhet te njohe me as faljen e Shqiperise. Cili shqiptar akoma mun te kete bindjen se pas atyre qe degjoi ne Parlamentin Shqiptar nga kryetari i PBDNJ-se, te vazhdoje te mendoje se, kjo eshte nje parti e te drejtave te njeriut, qe ka per mision mbrojtjen e pakicave kombetare. Nese do te ishte e tille, ajo, duhej te dilte ne mbrojtje te te drejtave te popullsise shqiptare te Camerise, e cila eshte pakice kombetare ne shtetin grek. Sidoqofte, me mire vone se kurre, ajo tashme nuk mund te mbulohet me "pas gjethes se fikut" dhe te na mbushe mendjen se, eshte nje parti shqiptare. Populli shqiptar dhe vete popullsia shqiptare e Camerise, do te shikojne sot e ne te ardhmen se, partise se zotit Dule do t'i duhet "te grise kemishen per te arnuar breket", sepse kombi shqiptar do t'i dale vete zot fateve te tij, me apo pa Dulen, Nanon e kompani. Kaq sa per sot.
