My next introduction to the Hill was the introduction of a long love affair, that began in 1940--
maybe 1939, because by 1940 I was pretty well established. In 1939, when I was a copyboy for Time
and Life in Washington, it was my job to be a gopher, and I would go up and pick up bills, and
handouts, and releases, and whenever there was an assignment up there for one of the Time and Life
photographers to photograph any personality, invariably I would ask to come along and hold their gear,

My maternal grandparents were the Spinas. My grandfather was from Alliano (Basilicata) and married a Calabrian from Santa Sofia d'Epiro. She was from the old Albanian community. When my mother and grandmother wanted to talk and didn't want my grandfather to hear, they spoke Albanian. My mother's 91 years old now, she grew up in America speaking all three languages: Albanian, Italian and English”.

“I was born in East Harlem in '44 and stayed there until I went to college, Fordham University in the Bronx. So I experienced East Harlem's whole transition from an Italian to a Latino neighborhood. East Harlem was like living in America and Italy at the same time. I remember in the elementary schools 90% of the kids were Italoamericans or new Italian immigrants. Little Italy had a different culture, a different vision of the world. My first close encounter with a culture other than my own was in the Bronx, because some of the students weren't Italoamerican. They were mostly Irish American. They atë differently, they had different holidays, different traditions...I remember the cafeteria, we Italians all sat together and the Irish and Polish kept to themselves. The first time I met a non Catholic was when I first began to work, and met some Jewish people. Before, I didn't have a single friendship with anyone who wasn't Catholic.”

Incoming Worcester Mayor Konstantina Lukes, who takes the seat vacated by Lieutenant Governor-elect Tim Murray, says she learned early in life to distrust the government. The eight-term city councilor-at-largë, the second-biggest vote-getter in the last election, says she has always based her outlook on questioning whether government works in the best interest of its citizens. With a change in leadership at the state level and with so many projects in development in Worcester, she talks about the need for a city government environment thatï¿½s conducive to change ï¿½ and the need for a public forum in which to make those changes.

In your role as City Councilor, youï¿½ve been labeled a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. Some call you a contrarian. How will you strike a balance between advocacy and being able to call attention to problems?

Lukes: I come to the mayorship based on a popular vote rather than the selection of my peers. The popular vote indicates there is some support for independent thought, and fiscal conservatism.

Iï¿½ve always had a place in my heart for outsiders, having been labeled one myself. My parents were Albanian immigrants who were cut off from their families in the Old Country and I learned early in life that certain governments had to be distrusted. I had a godfather who went back to the old country to Albania, didnï¿½t like it, tried to leave and was then [made] a political prisoner for 15 years. All mail was censored; you couldnï¿½t travel in or out of the country.

Niketa Dardani

Të Deum is an early Christian hymn of praise. The great hymn of Christianity "Të Deum Laudamus (ty zotë te lavderojme)" was written by an Albanian Archbishop over fifteen hundreds years ago by Niketa Dardani.

Në hapësirën e iliro-shqiptarëve u formuan edhe disa personalitete që themeluan letërsinë e krishterë të ritualit roman. Kryelutja mijëvjeçare e krishtërimit përëndimor "Ty zot të lavdërojmë" - "Të Deum Laudamus", e cila u kompozua nga shën Niketa i Dardanisë (ose shën Niketa i Remesianës), u përhap në disa variante në Europën Përëndimore pas vitit 525 dhe është edhe sot një prej vlerave kryesore të krishtërimit. Sipas burimeve serioze të arkeomuzikologjisë, duke përfshirë ato britanike, franceze dhe italiane, Niketa ka shkruar se "ishte dardan" ("dardanus sum") . Ndërsa përkthimi i parë i Biblës prej hebraishtes në latinishte, i njohur me emrin "La Vulgata", u arrit në vitin 405, nga një ilir tjetër i shenjtëruar, Jeronimi i Eusebit (Hieronymus, i mbiquajtur edhe "shën Gjeri") . Shën Niketa dhe shën Jeronimi, që pasuruan kulturën e krishtërimit të Përëndimit, patën bashkëkohës e pasues që dhanë të njëjtën ndihmesë historike për pasurimin e letërsisë së krishtërimit lindor, përmes përkthimeve në greqishte të vjetër të ungjijve në dorëshkrimet e tipit "kodik".
